The Real Estate Roundtable submits comments for the record of the virtual hearing scheduled for June 10, 2020 before the Financial Services Committee’s  Subcommittee on Housing Community Development, and Insurance, entitled, “The Rent is Still Due: America’s Renters, COVID-19 and an Unprecedented Eviction Crisis.”

RER’s letter recommends that Congress authorize an emergency rental assistance program – for both residential and business tenants impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic – as a key platform for our economy’s long-term recovery from the ongoing public health crisis.

The letter explains that tenants’ rental revenues are the foundational link in an “obligation chain” that supports local government property taxes to pay for essential community servcies, provides the revenue to pay the salaries and benefits of the workers at all skill levels in our industry, keeps the mortgage system functioning, and supports Americans’ pension and retirement savings.
